About the Timeline

This timeline was produced in conjunction with the exhibition Conceptions of White co-published by the MacKenzie Art Gallery and the Art Museum at the University of Toronto. It was compiled by co-curators John G. Hampton and Lillian O’Brien Davis building off a research toolkit originally published in July 2020.

About the Exhibition

Conceptions of White is a project offering context and nuanced perspectives that help viewers grapple with contemporary configurations of White identity. It examines the origins, travel, and present reality of “Whiteness” as a concept and a racial invention that classifies degrees of civility/humanity. It was presented at the MacKenzie Art Gallery, Art Museum at the University of Toronto, and the Vancouver Art Gallery.

Conceptions of White included works by Jeremy Bailey, Deanna Bowen, Jennifer Chan, Nicholas Galanin, Ken Gonzales-Day, Arthur Jafa, Ryan Kuo, Michèle Lalonde, Barbara Meneley, Robert Morris, Nell Painter, Howardena Pindell, Hiram Powers, Fred Wilson and Artist Once Known (After Leochares).
